BSU VC denies allegations of fees increment

The Vice Chancellor, Benue State University, Prof. Moses Msugh Kembe has out rightly denied allegation making the rounds in some quarters that the university has increased its fees.

Prof. Kembe who made this denial yesterday during his maiden chat with newsmen in Makurdi, said the institution has only reviewed conditional fees for new and graduating students.
According to him, these categories of student are expected to pay the sum of 25,000 naira once during their stay in the university, maintaining that they got the approval of the state government to increase the conditional fees.
He further explained that the need to shore up the internally generated revenue of the institution so as to meet up with the ever increasing cost of running it on a daily basis, informed the decision for this action.
“Our Faculty of Law which is highly subscribed risk de-accreditation if certain facilities like a mort court, library, hostels as well as the required number of staff are not in place. We require over 119 million naira for all these. It is sad to note that under the immediate past administration, the sum of 100 million naira was paid for furnishing of the law faculty but nothing was done by the contractor who is still asking for a balance of over 59 million naira.
“In the same vein, we need over 100 million naira to do same for the College of Health Sciences including constructing a clinical service laboratory before we can graduate students from that college. So, with all these we had to look inward to generate funds instead of relying on government”, Prof. Kembe explained.
The new VC intimated that since assumption of office in November 2015, he has taken measures such as constitution of a management committee on ICT, ensured computerization of Departments, Directorates and Centre, ensured successful accreditation of seven (7) programs, enhanced quality service delivery, ensured transparent conduct and handling of examination as well as timely processing and release of examination results and enhancing code of conduct of staff and students as steps towards taking the institution to greater heights.
He therefore, passionately appealed to well-meaning individuals and corporate organizations to come to the aid of the university in the area of infrastructural development.
